Jindřich Štreit, geb. 1946, ist ein außergewöhnlicher Chronist und Erzähler. Über fünf Dekaden beschreibt er in seinen Schwarzweiß-Fotografien das Leben auf dem Land in den tschechischen Regionen Nordmähren und Böhmen. Es ist eine umfassende fotografische, wie auch soziologische Studie, in Umfang und künstlerischer Qualität vergleichbar mit dem intensiven Werk eines Eugene Atget in Paris oder den Fotografien von Diane Arbus. In einer eigenen Stilistik und Bildsprache, nur eben gewachsen im Verborgenen, am äußersten Ende der damaligen Welt, welche in Wirklichkeit ziemlich genau in der Mitte Europas liegt. Diese Region ist geprägt von den Wirren und Beschädigungen der Weltkriege und einer nachfolgenden Diktatur, deren Rituale und Bildwelten, für uns heutige Betrachter, oft absurd erscheinen.
Das neue Buch (erhältlich im www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com) und die Ausstellung VILLAGE PEOPLE enthält Streits berühmteste Klassiker aus dieser Zeit sowie bisher unveröffentlichte Arbeiten, die mit den bereits bekannten Bildern leicht mithalten können, um fotografische Ikonen zu werden. Das Buch enthält einen Text des Fotografen Vladimir Birgus.
Die Ausstellung in der AnzenbergerGallery in Wien, die die Weltpremiere einer Wanderausstellung zum Buch ist, zeigt ausschließlich vom Künstler selbst ausgearbeitete Vintage Prints, die auch käuflich zu erwerben sind.

Jindřich Štreit has long been one of the most important figures in Czech photography. He has had more than 1,400 solo exhibitions and his works are in the collections of leading institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Though he has made many visually powerful series with photographs from various parts of the world, his fundamental works remain the unique set of photographs of the Czechoslovak countryside in the 1970s and 1980s. In them he has made an unembellished, unlyricized, unsentimental picture of life in villages of the poor area of Bruntál in the years of the re-established Communist régime, called ‘normalization’. No other Czech photographer has developed the rural theme so multifacetedly, broadly, and authentically. Even amongst the most ravaged of environments and their inhabitants, Štreit has often been able to discover something beautiful, even if only the desire for beauty and joy,friendship and love, timeless values.
The new book (available by the www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com) and exhibition VILLAGE PEOPLE 1965-1990 contains his famous classics from this period as well as unpublished works that easily stand in comparison with those that have already become photographic icons. The book comes with a text about the photographer by Vladimir Birgus.
AnzenbergerGallery will exhibit VINTAGE PRINTS only printed by Jindrich Streit himself. The exhibition is the world premiere of a wandering exhibition on occasion of the book publication.
